Trolley Bag Sizes Explained: Cabin, Medium and Large Check-In

Trolley Bags7 min readUpdated 26 Oct 2026

What are the standard trolley bag sizes?

There are three main sizes: a cabin trolley of about 55 cm (20 inches) for carry-on, a medium 24-inch check-in for trips of about a week, and a large 28-inch check-in for long stays. Airlines measure the outer size including wheels and handle, so confirm your carrier’s current limits before ordering.

Choosing between trolley bag sizes is the first decision in any luggage order, whether it is a corporate gift, a long-service award or a retail range. Pick a cabin trolley that is slightly too big and the recipient has to check it in at the gate. Pick a check-in bag that is too small and it stays at home while they borrow something bigger.

This guide explains cabin, medium and large check-in trolleys in plain terms, how luggage is measured, and which size suits which buyer. It is written from the factory floor of BAGS2CROWN, a trolley bag manufacturer in Mumbai that builds custom trolley bags to order.

The inch figure is a size class, not an exact measurement. Always check the outer dimensions of the finished bag, especially for cabin trolleys.

How Trolley Bag Sizes Are Measured

Luggage is usually described in inches, but airlines check the outer dimensions: height, width and depth. Height includes the wheels and the closed handle housing, and depth includes front pockets. That is why two 20-inch trolleys from different factories can measure differently.

  • Height: from the base of the wheels to the top of the bag with the handle fully closed.
  • Width: across the widest point, including side handles.
  • Depth: front to back, including pockets and, on expandable bags, the expansion gusset when opened.

Weight matters too. Airlines limit how heavy a cabin bag can be, and the shell, wheels and handle all add to the empty weight. Ask your supplier to weigh the finished sample so you know how much allowance is left for the traveller.

Cabin Trolley (About 55 cm / 20 Inches)

The cabin trolley is the most useful single bag for professionals who fly often. At around 55 cm it is built to go on board, so the traveller skips the baggage belt on short trips. It is also the easiest size to carry through a busy airport, up station stairs and into a cab, which is why many companies choose it as a standard travel gift.

  • Who it suits: sales teams, consultants, executives and anyone on one to three night trips.
  • Our options: cabin soft trolleys in polyester, nylon cabin trolleys, hard-shell cabin trolleys and laptop trolleys with a padded device section.
  • Watch out for: airline limits. Cabin dimensions can be built to common Indian carrier limits once you name the airline, so share it at enquiry stage.

Medium Check-In Trolley (24 Inches)

The 24-inch class is the all-rounder. It holds enough for about a week, yet stays easy to lift into a car boot or onto a train rack. Our check-in soft trolley in polyester, at 68 cm, sits in this class. If you can order only one check-in trolley bag for a mixed group of employees, this is usually the safest choice, because it works for both short and longer trips.

  • Who it suits: employees travelling for conferences and training, dealer incentive trips and family holidays.
  • Our options: check-in soft trolleys and expandable check-in soft trolleys, in 2-wheel or 4-wheel 360° spinner builds.
  • Watch out for: overpacking. A medium bag filled to the brim can cross the checked-baggage weight limit faster than people expect.

Large Check-In Trolley (28 Inches)

The 28-inch trolley is for long stays and international travel. It is the bag families share and the one people take when they move cities. Because it is the most visible piece of luggage on any baggage belt, it also gives your logo the most exposure, so placement and branding method deserve extra thought here.

  • Who it suits: long-service awards, overseas assignments and premium retail ranges.
  • Our options: soft-side builds in ballistic or 1680D polyester and nylon, with expandable zips, compression straps and reinforced corners.
  • Watch out for: bulk. Large trolleys take up storage space at your end, so plan phased delivery for big orders.

Gifting All Three: Trolley Bag Sizes in a Set of 3

When you are not sure how a recipient travels, a set of three removes the guesswork. We make soft trolley sets of three in matching colours, with expandable zips, compression straps and reinforced corners, and corporate gift luggage sets for awards and premium gifting. Sets nest inside one another, which saves space in your store room until the event. See our corporate gift items to build a fuller gift.

Soft-Side or Hard-Shell: Does It Change the Size?

The size class stays the same, but the usable space and feel differ:

  • Soft-side (polyester or nylon): slightly flexible, with outer pockets and the option of an expandable zip. Good for travellers who carry documents and laptops.
  • Hard-shell (ABS/PC, or PP on cabin trolleys): rigid walls that protect contents, usually without outer pockets. Good for a sleek gift look.

For hard shells, remember that the walls do not give, so a bag packed to the edge cannot be squeezed into a tight overhead locker. Soft-side bags forgive a little overpacking, which is one reason they remain popular for gifting across mixed groups of travellers. If you are unsure, order one sample in each shell and let a few colleagues travel with them before you finalise.

Whichever shell you pick, branding is done in-house: screen print, heat transfer, metal badges, debossing, embroidered or woven labels on soft panels, branded lining and body colour matching.

Sizing Mistakes to Avoid in a Bulk Order

  • Going by the inch label alone: ask for the outer dimensions of the finished sample, measured with wheels and handle.
  • Ignoring the airline: a cabin trolley bag size that suits one carrier can be too large for another. Tell your supplier which airlines your teams fly most.
  • One size for every recipient: senior staff on long trips and juniors on short trips need different bags. Splitting an order across two sizes is simple when there is no fixed minimum order.
  • Forgetting the empty weight: a heavy shell eats into the traveller’s baggage allowance.
  • Skipping the sample: roll it, extend the handle, open the expander and pack it before you approve bulk production.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Frequent flyers and sales teams: a cabin trolley, built to your airline’s limits.
  • A single gift for all employees: the 24-inch medium check-in, which suits most trips.
  • Long-service and milestone awards: a 28-inch trolley or a set of three.
  • Retail and private-label ranges: all three sizes, so customers can buy a matching set.
  • Team and event travel: pair trolleys with duffle bags or travel bags for kit and hand luggage.

Trolley Bag Sizes: FAQs

Quick answers to the sizing questions buyers ask before ordering trolley bags in bulk.

A cabin trolley is around 55 cm (20 inches) tall, measured including the wheels and closed handle. Cabin limits vary by airline, so name your carrier and we build the dimensions to its limits.

A 24-inch trolley is the medium check-in size and suits trips of about a week. The 28-inch trolley is the large check-in size for long stays and international travel.

Yes. We build cabin trolleys to your airline’s limits and check-in trolleys in 24 and 28 inch sizes, in your choice of colour, lining and hardware. Share the size you need when you enquire.

Yes. We make soft trolley sets of three in matching colours with expandable zips, compression straps and reinforced corners, as well as corporate gift luggage sets.

Only with the expansion zip closed. Opening it adds depth, which can take a cabin bag past airline limits, so expandable zips are most useful on check-in sizes.

There is no fixed MOQ. Bulk production takes about 7 to 10 days from an approved sample and confirmed materials, with sampling before that.
