10 Questions to Ask a Travel Bag Manufacturer
Travel Bags8 min readUpdated 27 Oct 2026
What should you ask a travel bag manufacturer before ordering?
Confirm the supplier makes the bags in-house, then ask about MOQ, materials and denier, cabin sizing, wheels and handles, branding methods, sampling, lead time, customisation and delivery. Clear, specific answers to these ten questions protect your budget, your schedule and your brand.
Choosing the right travel bag manufacturer decides whether your bulk order arrives on time, matches the approved sample and survives its first few trips. Travel bags take more punishment than almost any other branded product: they are dragged through airports, thrown into bus holds and over-packed on the way home. Weak wheels, thin fabric or a cheap zip show up quickly, and your logo is on every one of them.
Whether you are buying for corporate gifting, an incentive programme, a hotel or tour business, or a retail range, these ten questions will help you compare suppliers on facts rather than price alone. They work just as well for a first order of corporate travel bags as for a repeat retail range. For each one we explain why it matters and what a good answer sounds like, drawing on our experience as a travel bags manufacturer in Mumbai since 1989.
1. Are You a Travel Bag Manufacturer or a Trader?
Why it matters: Many suppliers are traders who pass your order to someone else’s factory. That adds a margin, slows down changes and makes quality hard to control, because the person quoting you never touches the bags.
A good answer sounds like: “We cut, stitch, brand and finish in our own unit. You can visit the factory, and any change goes straight to the production floor.”
Red flag: the supplier avoids factory visits, cannot say where the bags are made, or needs a day to answer basic production questions.
2. What Is Your Minimum Order Quantity?
Why it matters: A high MOQ forces you to over-order or pay a premium. If you are running a pilot batch, a small achiever group or a phased programme, you need a supplier who can scale with you.
A good answer sounds like: “There is no fixed MOQ. Share your quantity and we will confirm the rate, with slabs that improve as volume rises.”
Red flag: a high fixed minimum with no flexibility, or a low quote that only applies above a quantity you never asked for.
3. Which Materials and Denier Grades Do You Offer?
Why it matters: Fabric grade drives weight, abrasion resistance and cost. A supplier who offers only one fabric is choosing for you, and a vague answer such as “strong polyester” tells you nothing.
A good answer sounds like: “We work in 600D to 1680D polyester, ballistic weave, nylon and canvas, plus PU and leather for premium weekenders. We will recommend a grade for your use and budget.”
Red flag: no denier stated on the quote, or a sample in a heavier fabric than the one priced for bulk.
4. Can You Build to Cabin and Check-in Size Limits?
Why it matters: A cabin bag that is a few centimetres too large becomes a gate-check problem for every traveller who carries it. For flight-based programmes, sizing is not a detail.
A good answer sounds like: “Cabin builds are around 55 cm and check-in builds are larger. Tell us the carrier limits you want to meet and we will build to them.”
Red flag: only one fixed size on offer, or no measured dimensions on the sample.
5. What Wheels, Handles and Hardware Do You Use?
Why it matters: On trolleys and wheeled duffles, wheels and handles are the highest-wear parts. Zips, sliders, webbing and buckles fail long before good fabric does, and they are where low quotes usually cut corners.
A good answer sounds like: “We offer 2-wheel and 4-wheel spinner options with retractable aluminium handles, and upgraded grades on request. Zips, sliders, webbing and buckles are specified to your order.” See our trolley bags for the formats available.
Red flag: no clarity on wheel or zip quality, or hardware on the sample that differs from what is quoted.
6. Which Branding Methods Do You Do In-House?
Why it matters: Outsourced branding means another vendor, another delay and colour drift between batches. The right method also depends on the material, so the supplier should advise you, not just print what is easiest.
A good answer sounds like: “Screen print, embroidery, sublimation on polyester, heat transfer, woven labels, metal badges, rubber and PVC patches and debossing on leather and PU, all in-house, with colour matching to your shade card.”
Red flag: one branding method offered for every material, or a separate vendor and timeline for printing.
7. Will I Get a Pre-Production Sample?
Why it matters: The sample is your one chance to check logo size and colour, stitching, zips and handles before hundreds of bags are made. A supplier who skips it, or charges heavily for it, shifts the risk onto you.
A good answer sounds like: “Yes. We make a branded pre-production sample for approval, bulk production starts only after you sign it off, and the sample cost is adjusted against your confirmed order.”
Red flag: pressure to confirm bulk from catalogue photos alone, or no written record of what was approved.
8. What Is the Production Lead Time?
Why it matters: Travel bag orders are usually tied to a date: a trip, a launch or a festive gifting season. A supplier who cannot give a clear window, or who quotes from the enquiry date instead of from sample approval, is hard to plan around.
A good answer sounds like: “About 7 to 10 days from the approved sample and materials. Share your required-by date and we will plan sampling and production backwards from it.”
Red flag: a promised date that ignores sampling and transport, or a timeline that keeps moving once the order is confirmed.
9. How Do You Pack, Mark and Deliver?
Why it matters: Bulk travel bags take up a lot of space. If they arrive unmarked or in one lot when you needed them split across branches, your team spends days sorting cartons.
A good answer sounds like: “Individual poly bags, carton counts and consignee marking. Direct delivery across Mumbai and Maharashtra, transport pan-India, and phased delivery segregated by branch, district or centre if you need it.”
Red flag: no clear answer on who arranges transport or how cartons will be marked.
10. Can You Customise Compartments and Build a Complete Kit?
Why it matters: Off-the-shelf bags rarely fit a specific use exactly. Shoe compartments, laptop sections, trolley sleeves or an extra pouch can be what makes people keep using the bag.
A good answer sounds like: “Dimensions, compartments, pockets, colourways and trims are built to your specification. We can also add toiletry kits, packing cubes or a full travel combo gift set.” Explore our duffle bags and corporate gift items for kit ideas.
Red flag: every request answered with “only standard models available”.
How to Compare Answers from Different Suppliers
Send the same ten questions to every travel bag supplier on your shortlist and put the replies side by side. The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest order once re-sampling, late delivery or a batch of broken wheels is counted. A travel bag manufacturer that answers clearly, in writing and with numbers, is usually the one that delivers what it promised. Use these checks when comparing:
- Specific beats vague: denier grades, sizes and lead times in numbers are a good sign.
- Compare like for like: put the same material, size, branding and packing on every quote.
- Judge the sample, not the catalogue photo: the sample shows what bulk will look like.
- Check who you are speaking to: a travel bag manufacturer can answer production questions on the spot; a trader often has to check and come back.
