Delivery Backpacks vs Bike Boxes vs Saddle Bags

Delivery Bags8 min readUpdated 27 Oct 2026

Which is better for delivery: a backpack, a bike box or saddle bags?

Delivery backpacks suit most food and parcel fleets because they move with the rider, work on any vehicle or on foot, and carry a large branded panel. Bike boxes suit heavy, bulky loads on dedicated two-wheelers, and saddle bags suit lighter, split loads where riders want weight off their back.

Picking between delivery backpacks, bike boxes and saddle bags is really a decision about where the load sits: on the rider’s back, on a rigid box behind the seat, or in bags hanging on either side of the vehicle. Each choice changes how much a rider can carry, how comfortable a long shift feels, how fast handovers are and how visible your brand is on the road. There is no single best format. There is a best format for your goods, your vehicles and your routes.

This guide compares the three side by side for restaurants, cloud kitchens, grocery services and logistics fleets. It is written from our experience as a delivery bags manufacturer in Mumbai that builds fabric delivery bags in-house.

Delivery Backpacks

A delivery backpack is the most common format on Indian roads, and for good reason. It goes wherever the rider goes: on a scooter, a motorbike, a cycle or up five floors in a building with no lift. The order never leaves the rider’s control, which matters in apartment complexes and gated societies where riders must walk to the door.

Fleet managers like backpacks because they are not tied to a vehicle. Riders can change bikes, take shared vehicles or switch to walking routes without any refitting. The back panel sits at eye level for traffic behind the rider, which makes it the most visible branding space of the three.

The trade-off is weight. Every kilo sits on the rider’s shoulders for the whole shift, so padded straps, a well-shaped back and a bag sized to your largest typical order are essential. We build insulated food delivery backpacks with insulated foam walls, a foil-type reflective layer, a sealed closure and a wipe-clean, food-safe lining, and non-insulated versions for parcels. Platform-style backpacks with rigid bases and wide openings keep pizza boxes and meal containers level.

Best for: food delivery, cloud kitchens, quick-commerce and courier fleets with mixed vehicles or walking legs.

Bike Boxes

A bike box is a rigid shell mounted on a frame behind the seat of a two-wheeler. Because the vehicle carries the weight, it can hold heavier and bulkier loads than a backpack without tiring the rider. The hard shell also protects fragile items and is usually lockable.

The downsides are flexibility and cost. A box needs a fitted vehicle, so it suits fleets that own their bikes. It takes time to fit and remove, adds width to the vehicle in traffic, and the order has to be unloaded and carried to the door separately. BAGS2CROWN does not make rigid moulded boxes. Many fleets that use boxes still need fabric bags inside them, such as collapsible delivery bags or insulated bags, so a single order can be carried from the box to the door.

Best for: company-owned two-wheeler fleets carrying heavy or bulky loads such as bulk grocery or large catering orders.

Saddle Bags

Saddle bags are a pair of bags that hang on either side of the seat or a rear rack. They split the load into two smaller compartments and keep the weight low on the vehicle, which riders often find more stable than a tall box. They come off the vehicle more easily than a box, so riders can move them between bikes.

The limits are capacity and shape. Each side is narrow, so wide pizza boxes and large meal trays do not sit flat, and the bags hang close to the road where splashes and dust are worst. Saddle bags are not one of our standard delivery formats, but custom size and pattern is part of our service. Share a sketch or a sample with your dimensions and we will confirm whether it can be built in our fabrics.

Best for: lighter, split loads such as pharmacy, documents and small parcels on cycles and scooters.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Restaurants and cloud kitchens: insulated delivery backpacks, or pizza delivery bags for pizza outlets.
  • Mixed or rider-owned vehicles: backpacks, because they need no fitting.
  • Heavy loads on company-owned bikes: a bike box, with fabric bags inside for the doorstep handover.
  • Light, split loads on cycles: saddle bags.
  • Parcels and e-commerce: non-insulated backpacks or courier and e-commerce delivery bags.

Many fleets end up using more than one format. A pilot batch of each on real routes for a couple of weeks gives you better answers than any spec sheet.

Branding and Rider Visibility

All fabric delivery backpacks we make are branded in-house using screen printing, heat transfer, sublimation on polyester bodies, embroidery, woven labels and rubber or PVC patches. Reflective panels and trims help late-night riders stay visible. On delivery backpacks, the back panel is the most valuable space. Keep it simple: a large logo and, if you take direct orders, your app name or phone number. Body and trim colours can be matched to your shade card.

Rider Comfort on Long Shifts

Riders on food and quick-commerce fleets can spend most of the day with a bag on, so comfort is not a small detail. It decides whether riders use the bag properly or stuff orders into it any way they can. Before you approve a format, have two or three riders use the sample fully loaded through a peak shift and ask them direct questions. Do the straps dig in after a few hours? Does the bag sit steady when they brake hard? Can they open it and hand over an order quickly at a gate without taking it off completely?

Their answers often change the spec: a slightly smaller bag that riders like will outperform a bigger one that stays half-empty in the corner of the hub. Share that feedback with your manufacturer before bulk production, because the sample stage is the cheapest point to change size, strap position or opening style on your custom delivery bags.

How to Spec Delivery Backpacks for Your Fleet

  1. Measure your largest typical order and share the inner size you need.
  2. Decide on insulation based on what you carry and your route times.
  3. Choose a weatherproof shell in coated polyester, nylon or tarpaulin for the monsoon.
  4. Send your vector logo and pick a branding method.
  5. Approve a branded pre-production sample after a rider has used it on a real shift.

Bulk production runs about 7–10 days after sample approval, and the sample cost is adjusted against your confirmed order.
